Code signing
Code signing attaches a cryptographic signature to software so that macOS can verify its signed contents and identify its signer. Changes to protected code or resources cause signature verification to fail.
A Developer ID certificate is issued by Apple for software distributed outside the Mac App Store. BetterDisplay’s signing identity is Developer ID Application: Istvan Toth (299YSU96J7), with Team ID 299YSU96J7. Check both the signature’s validity and this identity. A valid signature from another developer does not establish that a download is BetterDisplay’s official release.
Notarization adds Apple’s automated malware and signing checks. A signature establishes the signer and integrity of signed contents, while notarization records Apple’s assessment of the submitted software.
See verifying the BetterDisplay installer and app for the commands and expected results.
