Contrast
Contrast describes differences between lighter and darker parts of an image. A contrast adjustment changes those differences; raising it too far can lose detail near black or white.
Hardware contrast sends a setting to the monitor through a suitable controller, such as DDC. Software contrast changes the rendered image. Their numeric scales and visual results need not match, and neither slider measures the panel's physical contrast ratio.
