License terms, refunds and privacy
These terms explain free and Pro use, purchase and upgrade coverage, business licensing, refunds, support and privacy. Read them before purchasing. The purchase guide explains checkout and activation, and the upgrade FAQs explain how the terms apply to v5 and v4.
Last revised: October 4, 2026.
BetterDisplay (the “app”) is developed and licensed by Kodeon Software Limited (“Kodeon Software” or the “developer”). These terms explain permitted use of the app and related materials, free and Pro functionality, purchases, refunds, support, and privacy. Please read them before purchasing a Pro license. To contact the developer, use the Contact section on the official BetterDisplay website.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including applicable statutory consumer rights. The availability of a trial does not affect those rights.
Pro and Free Functionality
- The app offers both free and paid (“Pro”) features. Free features can be used without purchasing a license, provided that the user is a non-business user as described below. Pro features require a valid Pro license.
- Our goal is to offer genuinely useful free features that remain fully functional. Non-business users who do not need Pro features and choose not to support development by purchasing a license are welcome to use the app in free mode. The app will not display pop-up purchase requests or intrusive ads.
Trial Period
- The app includes a 14-day trial period. You can use it to evaluate the full functionality of the app, including Pro features, and check compatibility with your hardware and software environment.
- After the 14-day trial expires, Pro features will be disabled.
- Some Pro-only settings or changes made during the trial period may remain active to ensure a smooth transition from Pro to free mode (for example, custom virtual screens or smooth resolution settings will persist until you perform a reinstall, system upgrade, or hardware change).
- We recommend using the trial to explore the features you need and confirm that the app works with your setup before purchasing.
Pro License Price and Purchase Process
- The purchase price, currency, and applicable tax levels (Sales Tax or VAT) depend on your purchase location. These are automatically suggested by our third-party payment provider, Paddle, based on your IP address but can be customized during the checkout process. Any adjustments made during checkout (due to currency, exchange rates, or tax differences) are your responsibility, so please ensure you set your location according to applicable regulations.
- You may add business details and a VAT number for applicable VAT purposes during or after checkout, where supported by Paddle.
- Paddle acts as the merchant of record and authorized reseller for Kodeon Software. Paddle provides the in-app and online purchasing experience, handles invoicing, and manages payment methods, licenses, activations, and refunds. Purchases are subject to Paddle’s applicable buyer terms and refund policy, as well as applicable law. For issues regarding these areas, you may consult Paddle’s buyer support.
Pro License Conditions
- A Pro license covers the current major version of the app at the time of purchase. A later major version that is not included in your license entitlement may require a new license or an upgrade license.
- A Pro license covers at least one year of updates from the date of purchase, including any new major version released during that period. Any additional upgrade eligibility announced by the developer also applies.
- A Pro license also covers all past versions of the app, if needed for compatibility.
- The license is perpetual for every major version included in its entitlement. It is not a subscription. The release of a new major version does not remove your right to continue using a previously licensed version, whether or not you purchase an upgrade. Continued operation remains subject to hardware and software compatibility and compliance with these terms.
- You may transfer or resell a lawfully acquired Pro license in its entirety, subject to the discount conditions below. A permitted transfer includes all of the license’s activation rights and version entitlements. The previous holder must deactivate their installations and cease using the transferred license, including any earlier versions covered by it. A transfer does not restart the update entitlement period or increase the activation allowance. Transfers are arranged between the previous holder and the recipient. The developer does not facilitate transfers or provide assistance with transfer-related issues or disputes, except where required by applicable law.
- Discounts, including student discounts, promotional discounts, and special sales event discounts, are intended for eligible users acquiring the app for their own, permitted family, or licensed business use. You must not obtain or use a discount with the primary purpose of reselling the license, including acquiring discounted licenses in bulk or accumulating them for onward resale. This does not prevent the later transfer or resale of a license originally purchased in good faith for such use when it is no longer needed, subject to the whole-license transfer conditions above. Permitted family use and reassignment within the same licensed business are unaffected. This restriction does not override any transfer or resale rights that cannot lawfully be restricted.
- A license must not be split into separate activation rights for sale, rental, sublicensing, or supply to multiple independent users. Permitted family use and business assignments described below are unaffected. Splitting a key can cause users to compete for the same activation slots and deactivate each other’s installations, leaving buyers without reliable access to the app. This restriction protects users from those conflicts and from misleading offers of partial licenses.
Pro License Conditions for Personal Users
- One personal Pro license permits installation and activation on up to two personally owned Macs at a time. Alternatively, the same license may be used on up to two Macs owned by members of your family for family use. These are alternative uses of the same two-Mac allowance, not separate allowances.
- You may move an activation to another eligible Mac when replacing a device or changing your setup by deactivating the previous installation. The allowance is not a lifetime limit of two installations.
- The individual workplace and BYOD exceptions described under License Conditions for Business Users also apply. A workplace-provided Mac used under those exceptions is eligible within the same two-Mac allowance.
- If you need more than two activations for personal or family use, please contact the developer through the Contact section on betterdisplay.pro to discuss available options.
- Where Kodeon Software has reasonable grounds to suspect that a key has been split or supplied to multiple independent users contrary to these terms, it may temporarily reduce the activation limit or restrict further activations while investigating. Such restrictions are not intended to penalize permitted personal or family use or the resale of a whole license. You may contact the developer to resolve the issue, and restrictions will be lifted if the concern is resolved. Confirmed misuse may result in continued activation restrictions or, for a material breach, termination of the affected license, subject to applicable law. Where appropriate or legally required, the developer will provide notice and a reasonable opportunity to remedy the breach.
License Conditions for Business Users
- Businesses that use the app beyond the trial period are required to purchase a Pro license. This also applies when only free features are used. Although the app does not enforce this requirement programmatically, businesses are expected to comply with these license terms.
- Businesses may choose to use licenses either per user or per machine, whichever is more appropriate for their situation. A per-user license covers one designated user. A per-machine license covers one designated Mac, including its authorized users. In both cases, licenses may be reassigned between users or computers within the business, provided that the previous assignment ends and the same license is not used to cover additional users or machines outside the chosen licensing arrangement.
- For volume licensing (25 or more computers), please contact the developer through the Contact section on betterdisplay.pro.
- Non-profit organizations, charities, churches, and similar entities are not considered businesses under these licensing terms and may use the free version of the app.
- If your workplace does not provide BetterDisplay but allows you to install it on your business computer, you may classify yourself as a non-business user for the purposes of these licensing terms. The same applies if you are a BYOD user, private entrepreneur, or freelancer. You may use the app in free mode or purchase a personal Pro license. These licensing exceptions do not determine your status under consumer protection, tax, or other laws.
App Integrity, Modification, and Distribution
- The app is licensed, not sold. Kodeon Software retains its rights in the app and related materials. Your license permits use within these terms. It does not grant ownership of the software or unrestricted distribution rights.
- Except with Kodeon Software’s prior written permission or to the extent permitted by applicable law notwithstanding this restriction, you must not modify, patch, re-sign, repackage, or create derivative versions of the app, or distribute it in an altered installer, application bundle, binary, disk image, archive, or other package. This includes placing an unchanged app binary inside an unauthorized installer or download wrapper.
- You must not bypass, disable, tamper with, or facilitate circumvention of the app’s trial, licensing, activation, or integrity protections, including those provided through Paddle, except to the extent permitted by applicable law notwithstanding this restriction. You must not distribute or supply cracks, patches, fabricated activation responses, or other tools or instructions intended to enable unauthorized access to licensed functionality.
- Ordinary use of app settings, supported scripts and integrations, and lawful backups is permitted. This section does not restrict rights granted under separate licenses for third-party components. Businesses requiring custom deployment packages should contact the developer for permission.
- Public download links must point to the official BetterDisplay download page or an appropriate release in the official BetterDisplay GitHub repository for older versions. Hosting or redistributing copies of the app requires prior written permission, except where applicable law permits otherwise. Authorized internal deployment within a licensed business is permitted, subject to the modification and repackaging restrictions above.
Use of BetterDisplay Materials and Third-Party Websites
- BetterDisplay artwork, icons, documentation, website content, and other materials owned or controlled by Kodeon Software are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. The BetterDisplay and Kodeon Software names, logos, and branding must not be used to falsely suggest an official relationship or endorsement.
- A dedicated website whose principal purpose is promoting, recommending, or providing downloads of BetterDisplay, and which uses Kodeon Software’s protected materials or branding beyond the independent coverage permitted below, requires Kodeon Software’s prior express written permission. Permission to use the app does not authorize reproducing the official website, establishing a substitute official-looking website, or operating an unauthorized sales or support service.
- Bona fide independent reviews, recommendations, tutorials, community resources, and general software-directory listings do not require individual permission merely to discuss or link to the app. Kodeon Software permits reasonable use of app screenshots and its app icon to identify or illustrate the app in such coverage, provided that the use is accurate and does not misleadingly imply affiliation or endorsement. These permissions do not authorize copying the official website or substantial portions of its content. Rights available under applicable law remain unaffected.
- Independent coverage must clearly identify its independent status where affiliation could otherwise be misunderstood. It must not use a domain name, site title, logo, copied design, or presentation that misleadingly suggests it is an official BetterDisplay or Kodeon Software website, an authorized reseller, or an official support service. A disclaimer, attribution, trademark notice, or link to the official website does not grant permission for any use prohibited by these terms or excuse impersonation or a misleading overall presentation. Labeling a site an “independent guide” or stating that names and logos are used “for identification only” does not make otherwise prohibited conduct permissible. Independence notices must be clear and prominent where needed. Fine print in a footer cannot substitute for an accurate and non-misleading overall presentation.
- Download links in such coverage must lead to the official download page for current versions or the official GitHub releases for older versions. These permissions do not authorize hosting app copies, modified packages, or download wrappers.
- You must not impersonate Kodeon Software, the developer, or official support, or solicit payments, license keys, credentials, or personal information under a false claim of affiliation.
- These provisions describe permissions for use of Kodeon Software’s materials and branding. They do not remove lawful rights of independent commentary, criticism, or other uses permitted by applicable law. Kodeon Software reserves its rights against infringement and impersonation under applicable law, independently of these license terms.
Authorized Sales, Pricing, and Payment Channels
- New Pro licenses must be purchased through the app, the official BetterDisplay website, or another sales channel expressly authorized by Kodeon Software.
- Without Kodeon Software’s prior written approval, third parties must not offer newly issued BetterDisplay licenses, sell separate activation slots, establish an alternative pricing scheme for official licenses, operate an alternative checkout, or solicit or collect payments on behalf of Kodeon Software. These restrictions also apply to websites that misleadingly present themselves as official or authorized.
- Accurate reporting of official prices, regional price differences, historical prices, or authorized promotions is permitted, provided it does not misleadingly imply that the reporting site can issue or sell official licenses. Authorized partners may operate within the scope of their written approval.
- Subject to the resale eligibility and whole-license transfer conditions under Pro License Conditions, the permitted resale of a lawfully acquired license in its entirety is an exception: its holder may advertise and sell that specific license at an agreed resale price without individual written approval. The seller must describe it accurately as a transferred existing license and must not claim to be Kodeon Software or an authorized reseller. This exception does not permit splitting a key, issuing new licenses, or operating an imitation official purchase page.
Refund Policy and Withdrawal After Purchase
- The 14-day trial gives you an opportunity to explore Pro features and check compatibility before deciding to purchase. If you are unsure whether the app meets your needs, we recommend trying it first.
- Refunds for purchases made through Paddle are handled by Paddle under its applicable refund policy and consumer protection laws. Outside those rights and policies, refunds are generally discretionary. If you encounter a problem after purchase, the developer or Paddle’s buyer support may be able to help resolve it. Seeking support is not a condition for exercising a statutory withdrawal right.
- Any statutory right of withdrawal applies unless the legal requirements for its exclusion have been met.
- For purchases made through Paddle, in cases of license-related technical issues (e.g., not receiving a license number, activation failures, or duplicate billing), you are entitled to a refund if the problem cannot be resolved. Applicable rights concerning faulty, misdescribed, or non-conforming digital content also remain unaffected.
- For purchases made through Paddle, contact Paddle’s buyer support to request a refund or exercise an applicable withdrawal right. Please submit requests promptly within the period applicable to your purchase. You do not need the developer’s prior approval to submit a request to Paddle. A refund ends the right to use the refunded Pro license. Eligible non-business users may continue using free functionality.
- If you acquire a second-hand license through a permitted resale, any request to cancel or obtain a refund for that resale transaction must be directed to the seller from whom you acquired it. Kodeon Software does not refund amounts paid to third-party sellers or handle their resale refunds or disputes, except where required by applicable law. A license transfer does not create a new purchase from Kodeon Software or Paddle or restart the original purchase’s refund period. Any statutory rights you may have against the seller or another legally responsible party remain unaffected.
Compatibility Issues
- Due to the vast number of hardware and software configurations, the developer cannot guarantee that the app will work perfectly on every system. We recommend using the trial period to verify compatibility with your specific setup.
- The app depends heavily on macOS and uses undocumented OS features. The developer therefore cannot guarantee that the app or any specific feature will work properly on every new version of macOS. Apple’s changes can occasionally break features.
- Compatibility-related refund requests are considered under the refund policy above. These compatibility limitations do not exclude applicable statutory rights or remedies.
- The app leverages less common technologies (such as the DDC/CI protocol for hardware control and EDID override capabilities, which might affect display timings and communication). Properly implemented and thoroughly tested hardware should not be damaged, even by erroneous settings. However, some devices with inherent firmware issues or substandard design may experience temporary or permanent damage (including becoming “bricked”). The developer’s responsibility for such occurrences is subject to the Limitation of Liability below. Please use the app and its features with appropriate caution.
Support
- The developer is committed to supporting the user community by responding to GitHub Issues, participating in Discussions, and answering questions on the Discord channel. However, resources are limited and support is provided on a voluntary basis. Using the free version or owning a Pro license does not guarantee personalized support.
- While bug fixes and issue resolutions are a priority, they are not guaranteed, except where required by applicable law.
- The app is provided “as-is,” subject to applicable statutory rights. The Pro license does not include dedicated support time, and no service-level agreement (SLA) exists regarding bug fixes.
- If you have questions or encounter issues, you may find quicker assistance by searching through Discussions, Issues on GitHub, or browsing the Discord channel. You may also contact the developer through the Contact section on betterdisplay.pro.
Privacy Policy and Data Security
- Licensing is handled via the third-party provider Paddle. The app communicates with Paddle’s servers to verify licenses, check trial status, and facilitate checkout using Paddle’s SDK. The licensing component transfers the data required by Paddle’s services. For more details, please see Paddle’s Privacy Policy.
- The app includes automatic crash detection and log collection, managed by Sentry. Crash reports are used for diagnosing problems and may include technical information about your hardware and software environment. Depending on their contents and the provider’s processing, diagnostic data may include information considered personal data under applicable law. For details on Sentry’s privacy practices, please refer to Sentry’s Privacy Policy.
- You can disable Crash reporting, Licensing & Pro Features, and automatic update checks in Application settings. Disabling licensing limits the app to free features. These settings do not disable connections made by network-connected device features or integrations you choose to use.
- The developer does not build marketing lists from app use or maintain an app-usage tracking database. Paddle and Sentry process information for payment, licensing, activation, and crash analysis as described in their respective privacy policies. Information you provide when contacting support may be used to respond to your request or resolve your issue.
- The built-in updater (Sparkle) retrieves update metadata and downloads updates from GitHub. Network-connected device features and integrations can also communicate with the devices or services you configure. These connections are part of the features you choose to use.
Free Pro Version Upgrades
- The following Pro license upgrade arrangement provides at least one year of included updates for a Pro license purchase as laid out under Pro License Conditions.
- Pro access for app version v5.x is a free upgrade for users who purchased Pro on or after January 1, 2025.
- Pro access for app version v4.x is a free upgrade for users who purchased Pro on or after July 15, 2024.
- Pro access for app version v3.x is a free upgrade for users who purchased Pro on or after June 14, 2023.
- Pro access for app version v2.x is a free upgrade for all Pro license holders.
Limitation of Liability
- To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the developer shall not be held liable for damages arising out of or in connection with the use or inability to use this app. This includes direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages; loss of data, profit, revenue, or business; or device malfunction or damage, even if the developer has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
- Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability where doing so would be unlawful, including applicable liability for fraud, death or personal injury caused by negligence, or obligations and remedies under mandatory consumer protection law.
Versions of These Terms
- The current published terms are available at betterdisplay.pro/license. Previous versions and their revision dates are available through the edit history of the license discussion on GitHub.
- Publication of revised terms does not by itself remove version entitlements or other rights already acquired under an existing license. Material changes affecting existing license holders will be communicated, and any notice, consent, or other requirements of applicable law will be observed.
- If a provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue to apply to the extent permitted by law.
