EDID

Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) is information a display supplies about itself. It describes identity and supported capabilities, helping the computer understand what the display advertises. The related DisplayID standard extends capability descriptions for newer display technologies. VESA’s display-identification overview

BetterDisplay can show EDID data and, on supported paths, use an override. An override changes the information used to describe the display; advertised capability is still not proof that every mode or hardware control will work through every adapter.

Keep the operations separate: reading an EDID examines the supplied data, saving writes a copy to a file, and applying an override changes the description used by the system. Writing to the device's own EDID memory is a further, riskier operation. The interface article explains its warnings and safeguards.

See Display identification for how identity relates to saved preferences, and Display EDID for the available actions.

EDID override

An EDID override supplies replacement display-description data for the system to use. It can change advertised identity or capabilities without writing to the monitor's own memory. A system display override can also contain configuration properties beyond the EDID itself; the two terms are not interchangeable.

An override cannot add bandwidth to a cable or create a capability that the panel lacks. Keep a recoverable copy of the original data and follow the owning interface page's safeguards.
