Clipping

Clipping happens when different image values are forced to the same limit, so their differences disappear. If bright details all become the same white, highlight detail is clipped. The corresponding loss can happen in dark areas or individual color channels.

Increasing brightness, exposure or contrast too far can make detail disappear even though the screen looks brighter. Tone mapping can instead fit a wider range into a smaller one, with a different effect on contrast and appearance.

BetterDisplay's upscaling calibration uses a near-white test image to find a usable software-brightness limit. It is not a measurement of the panel with a colorimeter. See Image Adjustments.
