DisplayLink

DisplayLink is a USB graphics technology used in compatible docks, adapters and monitors. It adds displays through a combination of software on the Mac and dedicated device hardware. A connector being USB does not, by itself, mean that the device uses DisplayLink. Synaptics describes the technology and supported product types

BetterDisplay distinguishes registered DisplayLink displays from ordinary virtual displays when handling connection recovery. This is why a DisplayLink screen may follow a different recovery path from a software-defined virtual screen.

Showing an image and controlling monitor settings are also separate capabilities. For a hardware adjustment to work, the display, adapter and controller must support that operation; a working picture alone does not establish that support.

See Connection Management for recovery behavior and DisplayLink for the controller settings.
