GPU
A graphics processing unit (GPU) performs graphics and image-processing work. It can render the desktop, process effects and help present images on connected displays.
A GPU is different from a display controller in BetterDisplay, which names a method for a particular device operation. Rendering capacity and connection bandwidth also impose different limits: fitting an image in a graphics buffer does not establish that a cable can carry it at the selected refresh rate.
Software image adjustments and streams can add graphics-processing work. See Framebuffer, Link bandwidth, Metal and Image Adjustments.
