SHA-256

SHA-256 (Secure Hash Algorithm, 256-bit) is a cryptographic hash algorithm that produces a fixed-length value, called a digest, from a file’s contents. It is commonly displayed as 64 hexadecimal characters and used as a checksum to detect changes to a downloaded file.

Compare the computed digest with a trusted reference for the exact download file. A matching value establishes that the contents match that published file, even if the file is unsigned. A filename, file size or a hash calculated without a trusted reference cannot establish authenticity.

A hash does not identify a developer on its own. Code signing separately ties signed contents to a signing identity. Obtain a reference digest from the official publisher rather than trusting one supplied by an unfamiliar download site.
