Timeout

A timeout limits how long an operation waits for a response or completion. Reaching that limit tells you that the expected result did not arrive in time; it does not necessarily mean the device rejected the request.

An asynchronous command may already have started work when its caller stops waiting. A timeout therefore does not undo a display change or prove that nothing happened. This differs from polling intervals, which schedule repeated reads, and latency, which describes delay.

BetterDisplay integrations use timeouts when waiting for responses. Check the actual device state before retrying an operation whose outcome is uncertain. See Control Integration and Events and Third-party app protocols.
