Does a DCP or DCPEXT kernel panic mean BetterDisplay caused the restart?
No. A panic mentioning DCP, DCPEXT or AppleDisplayCrossbar points to a failure in the Mac’s display-related system components, but the name alone does not identify the trigger. Different panic messages and hardware arrangements can represent different problems.
Keep the complete panic report and note what happened immediately beforehand: sleep, wake, a display disconnect, a mode change, mirroring or another operation. Record the Mac model, macOS version, monitor models, cable and adapter paths, resolutions, refresh rates and HDR state. A report of a display-release timeout is different evidence from a failure while configuring display pipelines.
Compare a simpler setup before changing several settings together:
- Quit BetterDisplay and compare the same ordinary workflow. Remember that custom display configurations can remain installed after the app quits. This checks the running app, not every saved configuration.
- If the issue occurs only with BetterDisplay running, disable one relevant feature at a time, such as mirroring or connection management, and retain the results. Export preferences before any broader reset. See resetting app settings.
- Compare with one display and a direct connection where available. If you try another supported port or cable, keep the other settings consistent. A successful alternative is a workaround for that path, not proof that every HDMI connection is faulty.
Allow enough observation time for an intermittent failure. A crash-free evening or a restart after installing an app does not establish causality. The same applies to changing refresh rate, HDR or sleep settings: record the actual difference rather than treating the change as a universal cure.
For persistent restarts, follow Apple’s unexpected-restart troubleshooting, including software updates, peripheral isolation and diagnostics where appropriate. Supply the full panic report when seeking support. Preventing sleep may avoid a triggering transition, but it changes power behavior and does not repair the underlying fault.
