Why do my display settings disappear or switch monitors after sleep?

If even a display’s custom name disappears after wake, check whether BetterDisplay is recognizing it as the same display. Display identification connects saved preferences to a detected monitor. Configuration protection relies on that match to restore the intended settings.

Check the display’s identity

  1. Open Settings > Displays > [display] > Display Information… and note the system UUID under Identifiers. This is macOS’s identifier for the display.
  2. Sleep and wake the Mac, then compare that identifier. A changed UUID is evidence of unstable identification, rather than a missing Save button.
  3. For the affected existing display, open Additional Settings… > Display Identification & Settings Transfer. Review Display identification method. On Apple silicon, Basic + extended + port can help distinguish identical displays connected through different ports. Keep their connections consistent when testing this method.

Changing the identification method can make a display appear new and detach its saved preferences. If that happens, Transfer display settings can copy the intended old, disconnected record to the current display. Review the identity and transfer instructions before changing the match rule.

The global Default display identification method in Displays Overview affects displays the app has not seen before. It does not change the method for a display already saved by the app. Giving two monitors different displayed names also does not give them different hardware identities.

This can improve BetterDisplay’s matching, but it does not repair macOS’s own identification or guarantee that every dock and pair of identical monitors will remain distinguishable. If identities stay stable, investigate the particular setting or protection feature instead of assuming all lost settings have this cause.

For a diagnostic workflow that separates saved identity, mode protection and monitor adjustments, follow Restore brightness and display settings reliably after wake.
