How can I enable Night Shift for a TV?

If macOS classifies the display as a television, change its system display role to Computer monitor. Television classification excludes it from Night Shift and True Tone. Changing the role can remove that restriction.

  1. Open Settings > Displays > [TV] > System Configuration and Flexible Scaling.
  2. Enable Edit the system configuration of this display model.
  3. Under the additional system options, enable Edit display role and set Edited display role to Computer monitor.
  4. Select Apply, complete any helper or administrator authorization, and follow the requested activation or restart steps.
  5. Enable Night Shift and check its effect on the display.

The override applies to displays with the same vendor and model identifiers. It changes macOS’s classification, not the physical TV or the requirements of your connection. The display-role edit does not independently require Pro.

If the effect disappears when HDR is active, also check Turn off Night Shift and True Tone in HDR mode under Settings > Displays > Overview. That separate Pro option deliberately suspends the effects for HDR color accuracy. See System Configuration for the override’s scope and Displays Overview for global behavior.
