Why does monitor brightness control work but volume control does not?
Brightness and volume are separate monitor capabilities. A working DDC brightness command shows that the monitor accepts that command. Volume needs its own support, even when audio travels over the same cable.
First establish whether brightness is actually using DDC. Software dimming can darken the picture even when no hardware command reaches the monitor. Compare the monitor’s own brightness setting before and after adjusting the app. If only the image changes, troubleshoot the DDC connection before drawing conclusions about volume support.
Open Settings > Displays > [display] > Device Control > DDC Control > Configure Controls… and use Detect DDC Capabilities…. Review the reported features before applying automatic configuration. DDC channel: Available and DDC communication: Supported are connection results, not a promise that every feature is supported. A missing capabilities report also leaves uncertainty about the feature set.
In the same sheet, check whether volume is supported and enabled. The app can also show that another controller takes precedence, or that the selected audio device uses native volume control. See DDC detection and configuration.
Test the volume slider in BetterDisplay itself. macOS Control Center does not become a DDC volume interface when DDC is enabled in BetterDisplay. It uses the selected audio output’s native volume capability. If the BetterDisplay slider works but the volume keys do not, check keyboard targeting and Accessibility permission. A disabled Control Center slider alone does not prove that DDC volume has failed.
If keyboard volume changes the Mac’s speakers while the BetterDisplay slider correctly changes the monitor, open Settings > Keyboard > Volume Control Affects:. Choose Screen with the mouse pointer or Screen with the window in focus to target that display independently of the current macOS audio output. Leave native audio association off when you want the monitor’s DDC speaker volume rather than an associated macOS output.
Commands sent while the monitor shows another input still depend on its support for commands from an inactive connection.
Check the monitor’s own audio controls and documentation. If it provides no controllable volume stage, BetterDisplay cannot create hardware volume control by enabling a DDC feature. Use the supported controls on the actual audio device, speakers or headphones. When troubleshooting a KVM or adapter, compare a direct connection if available, but do not assume the adapter is at fault merely because brightness works and volume does not.
Use the hardware brightness and volume tutorial to check the actual volume controller and test the monitor at a quiet level. Its keyboard steps cover the listener’s engagement rule as well as the display target; changing the target alone may leave the default name-matching rule in effect.
