Can I reset a VMM7100 HDMI adapter from a macOS Shortcut?
Yes. Add a Run Shell Script action to a macOS Shortcut and invoke BetterDisplay's resetVMM7100 integration feature. This is the command counterpart of Reset VMM7100 HDMI Adapter in the app menu.
For the standard app installation, use:
"/Applications/BetterDisplay.app/Contents/MacOS/BetterDisplay" perform -resetVMM7100
BetterDisplay must be running with Enable CLI access and notification based integration enabled under Settings > Application > Integration. Adjust the executable path if you installed the app elsewhere. Run the Shortcut manually first and check both its result and the display's recovery before attaching it to another automation.
The command requires Apple silicon and a detected VMM7100 device. It resets all detected VMM7100 adapters. A display selector cannot limit this action to one adapter. Connected screens can lose their signal temporarily. It is not a generic reset for every USB-C dock or HDMI converter.
Resetting the adapter does not guarantee that every display reconnects or returns to the desired color mode. The CLI reset itself is separate from the display-specific reinitialize operation. For recovery specifically after wake or unlock, use the app's adapter reset and display reinitialization settings.
Creating the Shortcut does not automatically detect a powered-off monitor or run on every connection failure. Its trigger is a separate part of your automation. See Integration for command access and CLI reference for the available operations.
