Can BetterDisplay control my LG TV’s brightness and volume?

Yes, compatible LG webOS TVs can use BetterDisplay’s built-in network controller for supported picture and volume adjustments. You do not need a separate Python script for the controller’s supported features. The Mac and TV must be able to communicate over the local network, and the TV must authorize pairing.

Open Settings > Displays > [display] > Device Control > Configure LG webOS Smart Device…. If it is missing, add the controller through Add or Remove Controllers…. Enter the TV’s Device IP address, choose Initiate Pairing, and confirm on the TV or enter its PIN as prompted. The associated display must be connected to configure the controller.

Turn on Enable picture control for supported backlight or OLED pixel brightness, contrast and saturation adjustments. Picture-mode restrictions and TV firmware can affect availability and response time.

For volume, choose Full control for an absolute level, or Up/down and mute toggle only for relative commands such as those used with an amplifier over HDMI-CEC. Pairing alone does not guarantee every feature works.

If TV power handling stops working after moving video from the Mac’s built-in HDMI port to a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, the new path may not provide HDMI-CEC. Passing a picture does not prove that it passes power commands. The LG network controller provides a separate route where supported. The controller also supports input selection and optional automatic power handling. To request the Mac’s input when powering on, configure Specify Mac input, enable power control, and use Switch to Mac input on power-on. Check the TV’s network-standby requirements before enabling power automation. This is not a promise that every input or wake combination is supported.
