Why is flexible scaling missing for a display connected through DisplayLink?

DisplayLink displays use a driver-managed virtual display path, so BetterDisplay’s native System Configuration and Flexible Scaling editor does not apply to them. The available modes come from the DisplayLink driver. Purchasing Pro does not turn that connection into a native one.

For the underlying rendering method, see what flexible scaling and custom resolutions change.

A USB-C plug alone does not identify the display path: a dock can use DisplayLink, while another USB-C connection carries native DisplayPort video. Check the dock’s specifications and the display’s Display Information.

Different video ports on the same dock can also use different paths: one monitor may receive native DisplayPort video while others use DisplayLink. This can explain why flexible scaling is available for only one of several attached displays. Check each port’s documented connection type instead of assuming every monitor on the dock has the same capabilities.

For an ordered setup with driver modes, an optional virtual source, layout checks and restoration steps, follow Configure a desk with both native and DisplayLink monitors.

Ways to get more scaling choices

If your Mac and monitor support it, connect the monitor directly through a native USB-C, DisplayPort or HDMI video path and use custom HiDPI or flexible scaling. Check the Mac’s native external-display support before replacing a DisplayLink setup that drives several monitors.

If you need to keep DisplayLink, create a virtual screen with the desired desktop sizes and mirror or stream it to the DisplayLink display. The creation guide explains matching the monitor’s shape and setting up its presentation.

Configuring mirroring in BetterDisplay requires Pro, as does streaming. Ordinary mirroring is also available in macOS Displays settings. Streaming additionally needs Screen Recording permission. This workaround does not add modes to the DisplayLink driver. Test its image quality, responsiveness and wake behavior with your setup.

If a virtual desktop changes position after reconnecting, group Layout Protection can save the intended relationship between displays. It does not repair a frozen image or establish that a DisplayLink/virtual-screen combination will survive every sleep and wake reliably. Diagnose placement and image recovery as separate problems.

Other BetterDisplay features can still be useful on DisplayLink displays. Their availability varies: see DisplayLink device settings for supported image adjustments and experimental indirect DDC support. Missing native scaling does not mean every BetterDisplay feature is unavailable.

Creating the virtual screen alone does not change the image on the physical monitor. Select a HiDPI mode on the virtual source and explicitly mirror or stream that source to the DisplayLink target. Keep its aspect ratio matched to the target to avoid unwanted stretching. The physical panel still has the same pixel density, so this cannot make a Full HD panel physically equivalent to a Retina display.
