Configure a desk with both native and DisplayLink monitors
Set up a desk where one monitor uses native video and another uses DisplayLink, with comfortable desktop sizes and a predictable arrangement. Identify each connection first, use the modes that its driver provides, and add a virtual desktop only when the DisplayLink monitor needs a desktop size those modes cannot supply.
Before you begin
The worked example uses Native Desk, a primary work monitor on native DisplayPort or HDMI video, and DisplayLink Desk, a secondary monitor on a dock's DisplayLink output. These are example names; substitute the names of your own displays. Both may be attached to the same dock, but a USB-C connector does not tell you which video path a particular dock port uses.
- Check the dock manufacturer's port diagram and your Mac's external-display specifications. Native display limits depend on the Mac and its supported arrangement. DisplayLink adds a driver-managed USB video path; it does not increase the Mac's native video capabilities.
- Install a compatible DisplayLink Manager and finish its first-time configuration, including Screen Recording and any requested background-activity permission. Restart the manager after granting Screen Recording access.
- Start with working, separate desktops. Keep the built-in display or another independently usable screen available while testing. Save work before reconnecting the dock or changing presentation.
- Record the current modes, arrangement, main display, brightness, controller assignments and any existing Configuration Protection or group rules. If you use a virtual screen later, also record its associations, automatic policies and stream settings, including Resume Stream on Connect, its saved target and paused/hidden state before editing an existing definition.
DisplayLink Manager's capture permission is separate from BetterDisplay's Screen Recording permission. BetterDisplay needs its own permission for streaming; choosing an existing mode or using macOS mirroring does not require BetterDisplay capture access.
Identify each monitor and choose its desktop size
- Open Settings > Displays > [monitor] > Display Information… for each physical monitor. Compare its information with the dock's documented port path. Identify the actual monitor before changing it; matching connectors or similar names do not establish matching capabilities.
- Open App Menu > Native Desk > Display Mode and choose a comfortable available HiDPI mode. If the native monitor needs more choices, follow the native setup in Set up a fully scalable HiDPI desktop. Its System Configuration and Flexible Scaling changes have their own Apply and activation requirements.
- Open App Menu > DisplayLink Desk > Display Mode and try a suitable mode already provided by DisplayLink Manager. On Apple silicon, the manager's Settings > Additional HiDPI modes option supplies extra modes on compatible displays and is enabled by default in recent manager releases. Check the current driver requirements and limitations before changing it. Selecting the same logical size on two different panels does not necessarily make text the same physical size.
- Use the two monitors for a few minutes: compare text size, scrolling, window movement and pointer response. If the driver mode is comfortable, keep it and proceed to layout. If the needed size is missing, use the optional virtual-source procedure below.
The native flexible-scaling editor is unavailable for DisplayLink's driver-managed display. A virtual-source workaround supplies a different desktop to present on the monitor; it does not add modes to the DisplayLink driver or change the panel's physical pixel density. See why flexible scaling is missing on DisplayLink.
Use a virtual source only when you need it
For this optional branch, Virtual - DisplayLink Desk is the desktop where you work, and DisplayLink Desk is the physical presentation target. Native Desk keeps its own desktop. Match the virtual source's aspect ratio to the target and select a HiDPI desktop size on the source, following the virtual-screen streaming procedure for the detailed scaling setup.
- Make sure BetterDisplay has Screen Recording access under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording. macOS lists each app separately; allow BetterDisplay as well as DisplayLink Manager. Follow any system request to reopen the affected app. Apple's permission guide explains the system setting.
- Open Settings > Displays > Overview > Create New Virtual Screen…. Choose Match aspect ratio of and associate to a display, then set Display to match to DisplayLink Desk. Leave Associate the virtual screen with this display on. Turn on Configure full screen stream to this display, keep Rotation (portrait mode) at Landscape - no rotation for this landscape example, and select Create Virtual Screen.
- In the new source's menu, select the desired HiDPI mode under Display Mode. For a 16:9 example, use 2560 × 1440 HiDPI if it is genuinely available and comfortable. Check the resulting source desktop and the physical image rather than assuming creation selected your desired size.
- Open App Menu > Virtual - DisplayLink Desk > Stream Virtual Screen. The instruction Stream the contents of this display to: confirms that you opened the source. DisplayLink Desk should be the active TARGET. If no stream started, select that physical target here. Do not choose Native Desk or Self-Stream + Video Filters.
Streaming covers the target's separate desktop with the source's image. Place work windows on the virtual source; the target remains a separate desktop underneath the presentation. Command-click in the streamed image can warp the pointer to the corresponding source position. See Stream Display / Stream Virtual Screen for pointer and presentation options.
If the target was main, starting a stream can make the source the main display. The global Switch to native mode for full screen stream target setting under Settings > Displays > Overview > Advanced Display Settings… starts off; when enabled, the stream also changes the target's mode and attempts to restore it on stop. Keep that setting unchanged during the first comparison and verify the target's current mode.
If you prefer mirroring, first turn off Settings > Displays > Virtual - DisplayLink Desk > Association Settings… > Auto-start full screen streaming and use Stop Streaming on the source. Then open Mirror Virtual Screen on that same source and select DisplayLink Desk as its target. A mirror target has no independent desktop arrangement. Compare quality and pointer behavior on your setup; neither method guarantees the same result as native video. Use one presentation method at a time, since mirror targets are excluded from the streaming target list.
Remember the right association and layout
Make the virtual desktop follow its physical target
- Open Settings > Displays > Virtual - DisplayLink Desk > Associated Displays. Keep only DisplayLink Desk associated for this dedicated source. Associating Native Desk as well would make its presence part of the source's connection policy. Remove only relationships you intend to change.
- Open Association Settings…. For the streaming example, keep Auto-connect virtual screen and Auto-start full screen streaming on. Keep Auto-connect virtual screen when all associated screens are offline, Enforce virtual screen mirroring and Virtual screen follows display orientation off.
- Check that the source is connected and presenting to the intended physical monitor. These policies are saved with the definition and reconciled during display configuration. They are not a separate Apply/reboot workflow. The source follows whether an associated display is connected, not whether the entire dock is attached.
Auto-connect virtual screen defaults to on, while automatic streaming and mirroring default to off on a plain definition. The matched-stream creation path enables streaming for you. The two presentation policies turn each other off, and the inverse offline policy disables presentation policies. Enabling a policy does not grant capture permission; turning it off does not itself stop a running presentation. Resume Stream on Connect in the stream menu is disabled while association-managed automatic streaming applies. Read Associated Displays for the other policies.
Protect the desktop you actually use
Arrange your desktops so the pointer travels where you expect. With driver modes, arrange Native Desk and DisplayLink Desk. With a virtual-source presentation, arrange Native Desk and Virtual - DisplayLink Desk for the working desktop relationship. For streaming, the physical target still has separate bounds; keep them out of your ordinary pointer route. For mirroring, arrange the source rather than the receiving target.
- Under Settings > Groups, choose or create a group containing the relevant desktop displays. Check its Group Membership and Activation Rules…; the group must report Display group is currently active. Avoid adding rules to an existing group whose settings serve another desk.
- In Layout Protection, turn on Enable layout protection, then choose Add New Protection… and the secondary working desktop. Select DisplayLink Desk for driver modes, or Virtual - DisplayLink Desk for the virtual-source example.
- Set Arrange [display] next to to Native Desk and Position of [display] to Right of Native Desk for a monitor physically on the right. Leave the centered anchor alignment for the first check. Return to the layout overview and select Apply All Protections, then move the pointer across the adjoining edge. This action applies eligible layout and main-display rules from all active groups, so review competing groups before applying it.
The group and individual rule must be enabled, both participants connected, and the reference and position defined. Layout Protection starts off and restores relative desktop placement; it does not restart a frozen image. Its owning reference covers anchor offsets, main-display protection and rule removal.
Optional UI Scale Matching can choose among available modes to make text a similar physical size. Configure explicit watched and affected displays after the individual modes work; for virtual-source scaling, select the source rather than its presentation target and provide credible reported physical dimensions. Matching cannot create missing driver modes and skips mirrored targets. Record protected resolution values before enabling Update resolution configuration protections, which changes those saved targets as well as the active mode.
Check independent adjustments and recovery
A controller supplies BetterDisplay's technical controls, such as hardware brightness. The video path and the control path are separate: useful scaling does not prove that a dock passes hardware commands.
- Inspect Settings > Displays > [physical monitor] > Device Control for each monitor. On a compatible native third-party monitor, DDC Control can send DDC commands through its native connection. On the DisplayLink monitor, look for DisplayLink Attached Display and open Configure DisplayLink….
- If the DisplayLink assignment is missing, check Settings > Displays > Overview > Advanced Display Settings… > DisplayLink auto-discovery and the running manager. It defaults to on. The Device Control reference explains manual assignment through Add or Remove Controllers…; assign DisplayLink only to a confirmed DisplayLink path. Adding it manually enables Manual configuration, preventing automatic reassignment.
- Only if you want to test hardware brightness or contrast, enable the experimental Enable DisplayLink DDC control in its configuration sheet. It defaults to off and rebuilds the controller immediately. It relays those commands through DisplayLink Manager, with compatible driver and monitor support; it does not supply ordinary direct-DDC features such as input switching. Compare the manager's brightness/contrast requirements if needed.
- Make a small adjustment on one physical monitor, check the actual panel response and that the other monitor stays unchanged, then restore the original level. Test physical-monitor controls even when the working desktop is a virtual source. A moving slider or discovered controller does not establish hardware success; DisplayLink discovery does not synchronize BetterDisplay's brightness/contrast sliders with received values.
- After saving work, disconnect and reconnect the dock, then test sleep/wake separately. Confirm both physical monitors return, the virtual source connects only when intended, its presentation target remains DisplayLink Desk, and the working desktop returns to the correct side of Native Desk. Recheck text, scrolling, pointer response and independent brightness.
Check the result
You should have a usable mode on each physical monitor, or a deliberately chosen virtual source presented only on DisplayLink Desk. Native Desk should retain an independent desktop. The source's mode determines the virtual desktop size; the physical target's mode still determines its output. Confirm both roles in the menus and compare the actual image.
Move a work window across the intended desktop boundary, type and scroll on each screen, and watch the pointer for several minutes. Check placement after a reconnect and after wake, rather than only while the initial setup is unchanged. A correct layout, a moving captured image and independent monitor adjustments are three separate results.
Troubleshooting
- Flexible scaling appears for only one dock monitor: recheck each port's native versus DisplayLink path. Use driver modes or the virtual-source fallback for DisplayLink; see DisplayLink scaling.
- The source exists but the physical screen shows another desktop or nothing: verify that the source is connected, DisplayLink Manager is running with its own capture permission, BetterDisplay has streaming permission, and the physical target is selected. If it is a mirror target, stop the old mirroring relationship before attempting streaming. Do not create another definition until you inspect the existing one.
- The picture moves but windows or the pointer return to the wrong side: check group activation, membership and the source-versus-target choice in the layout rule. Fix placement separately from capture or driver responsiveness.
- A streamed image is frozen: check Pause Streaming/Unpause Streaming, source connection and the target relationship. Turn off automatic presentation before a deliberate stop/restart so it cannot immediately undo the test. If DisplayLink's own desktop is also stalled without the virtual presentation, investigate the driver/dock path first.
- Lag, high CPU usage or missing dimming appears with software adjustments: under Settings > Displays > [affected display] > Image Adjustments, check Prevent overlays from affecting screenshots and screen recordings. It starts off and appears when overlay adjustment paths are relevant. With it on, overlays can disappear from DisplayLink output or streams and some driver versions can use more CPU. Record its original value, turn it off for the comparison on each display using overlays, and compare again. Changing it permits those adjustments to appear in captures. See Image Adjustments for the adjustment methods and capture interaction. Compare the current driver and dock firmware before considering version-specific workarounds.
- Only hardware brightness fails: check the physical display's controller and compare direct versus dock connections using DDC through a dock. Software dimming changes the image and does not prove the panel's own brightness changed.
If a failure remains reproducible, collect Display Information… and app logs, along with Mac/macOS, dock firmware, DisplayLink Manager, cable/port paths and whether the failure affects placement, mirroring, streaming or ordinary driver output. Keep stable native video available while isolating one change at a time.
Undo or restore the desk
- Disable only the layout/scale rules added for this setup. Pause any existing protections that would prevent returning to the recorded modes and arrangement.
- For the virtual source, open Association Settings… and turn off automatic streaming or enforced mirroring before stopping presentation. Turn off both auto-connect policies if you need to control its connection manually.
- Use Stop Streaming on the source, or remove the active physical target in Mirror Virtual Screen. A manual mirror change is a saved macOS arrangement; quitting BetterDisplay alone is not its undo. Stopping a stream attempts to restore any main-display or target-mode changes made by that stream; verify them against your recorded originals.
- In Associated Displays, remove only the new relationship. Restore previous association targets and policies if you reused a definition, along with its original stream target, Resume Stream on Connect and paused/hidden state. Disconnect a temporary source using Connect this virtual screen, or use Discard… and its confirmation to delete a definition you no longer need. Disconnecting keeps it saved; discarding does not. Move needed windows to a retained desktop first. If the global Reconnect all remaining connected virtual screens after disconnecting one option is enabled, disconnecting one source can also cycle other virtual desktops; it starts off. Record that setting and account for the other desktops before testing or removing this source.
- Restore the original physical modes, main display, arrangement, brightness, controller settings, driver HiDPI preference and any overlay preference you changed. Then restore the original protection targets and group rules, not just their enabled switches. If you used native flexible scaling, undo only its changes and follow its Apply/activation steps; do not remove unrelated model overrides.
Leave DisplayLink Manager and its required permission in place if you still use the DisplayLink monitor. Removing a BetterDisplay controller assignment does not uninstall the driver. If you temporarily enabled Manual configuration, restore its original value so discovery can manage the display again; remove a newly added manual assignment only when appropriate.

Additional information
This section explains feature licensing and the platform requirements for this desk setup.
Features requiring Pro license
Changing the DisplayLink auto-discovery preference, native flexible scaling, matched virtual-screen creation and associations, virtual HiDPI configuration, streaming, BetterDisplay's mirroring actions, group Layout Protection and UI Scale Matching require Pro. Existing mode selection, Display Information, the DisplayLink controller settings and ordinary basic hardware brightness do not have a separate Pro requirement. macOS can configure ordinary mirroring independently of BetterDisplay.
Platform compatibility
The BetterDisplay workflow is available on Apple silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 26.3 or later, subject to the displays, modes, dock transport and controller support. DisplayLink Manager's Additional HiDPI modes toggle is specific to Apple silicon. Native external-display limits remain model-dependent; virtual-screen modes depend on macOS and the GPU, while streaming needs a connected source/target and BetterDisplay Screen Recording permission.
